Hoe kies je het juiste materiaal voor jouw laserproject?

How do you choose the right material for your laser project?

How to choose the right material for your laser cutting project?

With over 160 types of sheets in various colors, thicknesses, and properties, the choice is vast. But which material suits your design, application, or machine? In this blog, we guide you with frequently asked questions and examples from the Laser Cut Supply range.

Start with the application: what does the material need to do?

  • Construction or model making? Choose a sturdy, stable material like plywood, hardboard, or white MDF.
  • Presentation or visual work? Opt for acrylic in clear, matte, or color – sleek, smooth, and professional.
  • Crates, boxes, or test models? Cardboard, kraftplex, and corrugated cardboard are affordable and easy to cut.
  • Flexible applications? Think of rubber, felt, PE foam or neoprene.

Pay attention to the properties of the material

Not every material behaves the same under the laser. Consider:

  • Melting behavior: Acrylic (PMMA) cuts cleanly, but PET-G and foams can produce strings or melt marks.
  • Smoke and odor: MDF and rubber can smell significantly when cutting – good ventilation is essential.
  • Engravability: Colored MDF, veneer, and acrylic provide good contrasts. Cardboard and foam are less suitable for fine engravings.

Color, appearance, and finish

For visual projects or end products, appearance is just as important as functionality:

  • Acrylic: Available in clear, matte, colored, mirrored, fluorescent, or metallic. Perfect for displays, jewelry, signage.
  • Veneered wood: Walnut, mahogany, oak – gives a luxurious and natural look. Beautiful for interiors or gifts.
  • Biobased materials: Think of biopanel or kraftplex if sustainability is important to you.

And the thickness?

Most lasers can handle materials up to 6 mm just fine.Choose:

  • 1–3 mm: For light objects, jewelry, labels, or double-sided bonding
  • 4–6 mm: For construction, click connections, or freestanding objects
  • 7 mm and thicker: Only if you have a powerful laser and accept low cutting speed

Use our filters and product descriptions

On the materials page of Laser Cut Supply, you can filter by properties such as color, thickness, translucency, and finish. We always indicate whether a material is suitable for laser cutting, if it contains foil, and what the typical applications are.
